In 1998 the Prats family sold Cos d'Estournel to The Tailan Group. Cos d'Estournel is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé.
The strikingly exotic Chateau Cos d'Estournel with its sandstone pagodas was established by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel in 1791. Located close to the border with Pauillac and just north of Chateau Lafite, it is one of the most prominent estates in the Saint-Estephe appellation. The vines in Cos' well-draining vineyards are rooted in gravel soils with a high clay content. Combined with an south-facing exposure of the vineyards, the conditions for grape growing are excellent. In the last twenty years or so, the estate has started focusing more and more on Cabernet Sauvignon and on plot-by-plot work in the vineyard.
