If you love Meursault, you must try this. Intensely mineral aromas with a tightly-focused nose of crisp, yellow citrus fruits and the flinty gun smoke that you find in great white Burgundies. There’s an arresting energy to the palate, which reverberates with tangy stone fruits and grapefruit tempered by a cool crème fraiche creaminess coming through on the long finish, which owes its persistence to the quality of the fruit and the prolonged lees ageing.

Given that, 40 million years ago, the Rheinhessen was a coral reef, it makes sense that its pure limestone soils are perfect for those winemakers looking to perfect German Chardonnay. Brothers Tobias and Björn took over the estate in 2009 and increased Chardonnay plantings, using carefully selected French clones. The wine sees 10% new oak and a mixture of vessels, from barriques to 1200 litre Stuckfass.

TobiasKnewitz took over from his parents recently and together with his younger brother, Bjorn and his wife Corina, they have transformed this Rheinhessen estate. Discovering an emerging talent, such as Knewitz, is always thrilling, not least because the wines are still so modestly priced. The limestone-rich vineyards lend a mineral brilliance and precision to their wines and they are especially suited to the production of, not just high-class dry Riesling, but, Chardonnay as well.
