The 2014 Les Tourelles de Longueville is soft, pliant and giving, all qualities that make it an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Sweet red cherry, raspberry and plump red fruit are front and center. Les Tourelles de Longueville emerges from specific parcels within the Pichon-Baron property where the soils tend to produce a more savory style than is typically found in the Grand Vin and Griffons.

There are two “second wines” at Pichon Longueville- Tourelles and Griffons de Longueville. Tourelles is predominantly Merlot from the Sainte Anne vineyard and offers a juicy, approachable style of Pauillac that is delightful after just a year or two in bottle, but will also reward those with patience.

2014 is a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. 30% was aged in New French oak barrels and the rest in 12 month old barrels.

AXA Millesimes, the current owner has overseen the resurgence of this venerable estate. After some lacklustre wines in the 70s and 80s, AXA bought the property in 1987 and with the enlisted help of Jean-Michel Cazes have rebuilt the Chateau’s reputation. Jean-Michel stepped down in 2000 and Englishman, Christian Seely has taken the reigns and continues to push the quality level still higher. Pichon Longueville’s grand vin is a flamboyant and powerful expression of this noble Pauillac terroir. Their wines often exceed expectation at Southwold and are amongst the top performing “super seconds”.
