The house of Lallier specialises in producing champagnes by sourcing exclusively from vineyards officially classified Grand Cru and Premier Cru. This is 100% Grand Cru, the Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru Ay and the Chardonnay from the Grand Crus of Avize and Cramant in the Cote de Blancs. The provenance of the grapes enables a low dosage to express the purity and the richness of these terroirs. Using approximately 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay wine and a 9g/L dosage, the bottles are matured on their lees in chalk cellars for 24-36 months.

Founded in Ay in 1906 Champagne Lallier has significant holdings of Grand Cru vineyards and a high tech cellar, yet is wholly owned by winemaker Francis Tribaut. Free to craft wine in the spirit of an artisan domaine, Francis vinifies each parcel separately using a house yeast and keeps dosage low to create Champagnes with real character and finesse.

Old tasting

I am in no way an expert or regular Champagne drinker but those I have drunk I have at least enjoyed either on their own or as a mimosa ( sorry) or with chambord or midori ( again sorry) Moet, Heidseck Monepole, Vueve and have even been lucky enough to have a bottle of Cristal ( dont panic I didnt add anything to it ) This champagne however I found being blunt horrid. It tastes and smells old almost fusty and lifeless and for me just cannot be redeemed with anything added to it . Its musty, thick and just not nice. If you are a first timer or occasional champagne drinker( as am I) this may not be for you . Those of you who are more experienced with champagne may differ but I found a flute of this really hard work and all I could smell was the barrel it had been aged in, in fact it reminded me of a dingy little bodega my dad loved on the costa brava that had huge barrels of wine and wooden tables and he would buy a small paper cup and could try numerous samples of stinky wine that smelled like this and then fill a petrol can full of his favourite for about £3 of what my mum described as nail varnish remover or rocket fuel. Its hard work and I just found it overpowered everything and made feel unwell.

Why drink any other Champagne

All the flavour and half the brutal fizz, smaller bubbles, lighter on the plate, it’s far too drinkable also accompanies all seafood well, especially lobster. :)
