Krasna Hora, Herr Gewurz Stary Poddvorov South Moravia 2021

Herr Gewürtz is made from two types of clones harvested at different times. Skin contact fermentation from 2-4 weeks in big, 1,000-liter open plastic casks. After pressing, wine is aged in tank on the lees for 3 months.

Biodynamically Farmed. Wild yeast fermented. No fining and filtration. Low Sulphites. Vegan.

Krasna Hora (Beautiful Mountain) tend to vines planted on the gently sloping mountains around the town of Dolni Poddvorov, close to the Slovakian border. They own 8 hectares of vines, most of which have been planted on land that has been cultivated for wine production since the 13th century, when Cistercian Monks settled in the area.

With Southern and South Westerly exposures, the sites are carefully tended to. There is no use of herbicides or systemic agents, instead they use their own preparations of fertilizers. Herbs are planted in between rows to encourage biodiversity in their vineyards. This naturally reduces yields, but increases grape quality. 

Krásná Hora recently took on biodynamics and believe that this helps them to be more in tune with the vineyard and soils and have a better understanding of the land. Their vineyards are planted with traditional French varieties like Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Merlot. They also buy grapes from another 5 ha of vineyards, but all these vineyards follow organic practices and the team at Krasna Hora work very closely with the growers. All grapes are handpicked into small, open boxes with yields per vine kept below 1kg.
