This Loire Valley discovery really wowed us when we first tasted it a couple of months back. All the hallmarks of great Chenin Blanc are here: ripe apples and white peaches with subtle floral and smokey hints on the nose give way to a generously textured palate with perfectly judged acidity.

Savenni�res is renowned for making the finest dry Chenin Blanc in the world with incredible nerve and energy. The small appellation of just 145 hectares is situated south west of Angers on the north bank of the Loire river on a mixture of schist, clay and slate. The estate was created in 2007 when Philippe Fournier united two existing estates. The �Chamboureau� cuv�e comes from the vines that used to belong to Ch�teau de Chamboureau. Since the takeover the vineyards are now organic, yields have dropped significantly to around 25hl/ha and during harvest the number of �passages� through the vines has increased and all the grapes are hand harvested. The Anjou Blanc and �La Croix Picot� are from a mixture of their clay and schist vineyards, the �Chamboureau� is from pure schist. The Anjou is aged in large oak vats for 9 months whilst �La Croix Picot� and �Chamboureau� are aged for 12 months in oak barrels and aged further for 6 months on their fine lees in large oak vats. The Quarts de Chaume is made only in the best vintages from noble rot grapes. Yields and production are tiny making wines which are extraordinarily rich in flavour but strikingly well balanced between sweetness and acidity.
