Claude Courtois, Cailloux du Paradis Racines Rouge 2015
- Red
- 750ml
- ABV 12%
The red version of Racines is made from an undisclosed number of red varieties (Courtois is keen to emphasise the importance of viewing his wines as wholes rather than talking about the grape varieties contained within). Typically the majority of the wine is made from Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cot (the local name for Malbec). Very low intervention winemaking, with no added sulphur and everything done by hand. Deep purple in the glass the nose is redolent with pounded stones, warm iron and damp chalk. The palate has great depth of dried currant, fig and plum hewn to a depp, mineral bed. The wine has lovely acidity, a terrific structure and finishes with red berry fruit and mineral zest. Such vitality as if the roots referred to had sucked the life blood from the very soil.
