So far the only fully certified biodynamic estate in Italy's Franciacorta region. Franciacorta produces traditional method sparkling wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The blend here is 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir, with the wine ageing for 30 months on lees.

On the top of Santa Giulia hill, beside the Cluniac church of the same name, lies the glorious eighteenth century villa Palazzo Cazzago – home to the 1701 winery. The villa dates back to several families of Italian nobility, with 15 hectares of hillside in Cazzago San Martino, Franciacorta. The “1701” name was chosen to recall the first vinification of the estate’s “Brolo”, a sun-drenched 4 hectare vineyard framed by 11th century walls. 1701 is a certified organic winery, and has recently received biodynamic certification – in fact, the winery is the first and only certified biodynamic producer in the Franciacorta region.

About the winery

Duncan Savage

Previously the winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards, introduced his own label in 2011 with a goal to produce rock-solid, classic and elegant wines. Through his time at Cape Point, Duncan grew to understand maritime vineyards, which led him to source grapes for Savage wines from maritime and high altitude sites around the Western Cape.

Italian’s best kept secret

Delicious, totally drinkable champagne like sparkling Italian wine (not widely exported). Dry, mineral, less sugar than Prosecco so no hangover. Perfect as an aperitif or with food. Ideal for daytime drinking just like the Italians do!

Simply delicious sparkling better than most champagnes!

A delicious biodynamic sparkling, lovingly made using traditional method. If you love champagne take note! Golden yellow fine bubbles floral, medium intensity dry. Great on its own or with starters.

very good Bubbles

very balanced wine with fine perlage, note of nuts, green apple and bread crumb. very close to a champagne. i do not expect to be liked by english people used to cheap Cava or fulsome american wines.

Very poor wine

This was a basic wine at best. If I was being ungenerous I would say this tasted of industrial cleaner. I've never spent so much on a wine I liked so little . Apologies - this is a complete oddity in an amazing wine collection from a brilliant merchant who I buy from regularly.
